Segmenting is nothing but breaking down a word into its individual sounds. For example the word ‘pin’ can be broken down into 3 different sounds – “/p/, /i/, /n/”.
This activity is really important for young kids to develop strong reading skills and being able to decode the sounds can later help them in spellings as well.

Let’s Play & Learn
Choose the words that you want your kids to practice , it can be anything from cvc words to trigraphs.
On a piece of paper , make a rectangle box with 5 square boxes in it.

Next , write each word on each sticky note and make sure they are in big enough writing.
Now , let your child snip the sticky note with each sound . For example – the word ‘cat’ will be cut in 3 parts – ‘c’ , ‘a’ & ‘t’ as it has 3 different sounds whereas a word like – ‘chip’ will have 3 parts – ‘ch’ , ‘i’ & ‘p’.

Finally place these cut sticky notes in the individual boxes for sound mapping . This really helps kids understand the abstract concept of sound mapping.
