Making learning fun . One activity at a time

What is a Ten Frame ?

The ten frame is an incredibly effective tool in early childhood education for developing foundational math skills. By providing a clear visual representation of numbers, it helps young children build number sense, understand the base ten system, and master basic addition and subtraction.

Introducing ten frames in early learning settings can set children up for success as they progress in their math education journey.

In this post we will explore what a ten frame is and why it plays a crucial role in helping young children grasp early math skills.

What exactly is a Ten Frame ?

A ten frame is a simple, yet powerful visual tool that consists of a rectangular frame with ten equal spaces or boxes arranged in two rows of five. Using this tool helps children understand numbers, counting, addition, and subtraction.

For example: Imagine a ten frame where 8 of the 10 boxes have counters in them. This helps children easily visualize the number 8 and see how many more are needed to make 10.

Why is it important in early childhood education ?

There are some key benefits of using ten frame in counting , addition or subtraction some of which are listed below –

  1. Build Number Sense
  2. Visual Representation of Numbers
  3. Supports of the concept of Base Ten
  4. Enhances Addition and Subtraction skills
  5. Promotes Mental Math & Problem Solving

How to Use Ten Frame ?

Depending on the skill we want to practice we can use the ten frame accordingly –

  • For counting practice – Fill the ten frame with different numbers of counters and ask the child to count how many are present or how many more are needed to reach 10.
    • For Addition – Present children with an incomplete ten frame and ask them how many more counters are needed to fill the frame.
    • For Subtraction – Start with a full ten frame and ask children to remove a specific number of counters. Then, ask them how many are left.
    • For Matching games – Use number cards alongside a ten frame to help children match numbers with the corresponding amount of counters.

These activities help children practice basic math skills while keeping the learning experience engaging and interactive.
