There is no better way to teach a child than through play based learning ideas . Ditch those flashcards which are making your kids memorize rather than actually reading .

And as they go to higher grades and read more complex words then it becomes even more difficult to read so it’s really important to teach in the right way from the beginning.

This activity is based on science of reading and teaches to decode and read words.

Makes it more simpler and easier to understand and there is no memorizing , I can bet.

Let’s Play & Learn

Let’s begin this activity by selecting cvc word family that we want to practice.

Here I will be showing you to make your own flip book in just 2 mins for ‘at’ word family.

You will need a rectangular piece (not too big) of thick card stock paper or cardboard. Grab 8-10 sticky notes and staple them together on the rectangular piece of paper.

Now write the word family ‘at’ besides the sticky notes and write the beginning sound letter on the sticky note (one letter on one sticky note) . For example – ‘b’ , ‘c’ , ‘f’ , ‘h’ etc.

And that’ it , your own cvc flip book is ready . You can make this for all other word families and keep it handy for everyday reading practice.

How is this helping your child to read ?

What we are essentially doing here is breaking the word into two parts – ‘onset'(the beginning sound – ‘b’ ) & ‘rime’ (which is ‘at’ here) . Now what this does is that it keeps the ending sound (‘at’) constant for all the words.

So when a child starts reading he looks at the first letter(‘b’) and says it sounds and blends it into the ending sound (‘at’) . Now when he reads the next word with the letter ‘c’ then he only has to decode the sound of the first letter because the remaining part (rime) of the word is the same .

This makes it so easy and simple for the beginning readers and actually helps boost their confidence.

I can’t tell how proud they will feel when they are able to read their first word.
