Making learning fun . One activity at a time

Early Math Skills your child should know

Early math skills are important as they build a foundation for problem-solving, logical thinking, and critical reasoning.

These skills can be developed through play, everyday activities (like counting toys or sorting laundry), and interactive games that make learning fun and engaging for young children. Basically , math is everywhere around us.

In this post you will find essential skills to begin with your child in their early age.

SKILL #1 – NUMBERS & COUNTING

Numbers and Counting are always the first ones to be taught as they are the simplest to understand.

Now recognizing numbers is understating the symbols and what they are called whereas counting is actually relating the symbol to its factual meaning.

So it’s very important for kids to learn these together – Name + Meaning which means they can recognize number 1 and also understand that 1 means 1 object and so on.

For young kids start with practicing unto 5 and then move on to counting to 10.

SKILL #2 – PATTERNS

It the ability to recognize a sequence or arrangement of objects , numbers , shapes or colors that follow a specific order.

Recognizing patterns in early childhood can help kids build strong foundation for mathematical skills like sorting , classifying and logical thinking.

This can be taught through simple games at home like – arranging different color play balls in a color patterns.

SKILL #3 – SPATIAL REASONING

Put simply , spatial reasoning is the ability to understand how things move in relation to the space around us. For example – fitting pieces together , solving jigsaw puzzles , or finding shapes in the environment are some ideas of spatial reasoning.

Developing this skill can help children develop problem solving and critical thinking abilities.

You can encourage this skill development by playing with blocks , solving jigsaw puzzles , sorting shapes , learning directions while playing outdoors.
