Learning spellings doesn’t have to be boring! Instead of just writing words repeatedly, try engaging and interactive methods to make spelling practice enjoyable . While being fun and interactive hands-on methods are more beneficial as they help kids understand mapping the sounds , segmenting them and finally spell the word.
Activity 1 – Spell it with Play doh
Using play doh to build the letters and spell words is a hands-on , engaging and sensory exposure which spelling practice a fun experience . Think of a word you want your child to practice and let them spell the sounds and build the word using play doh .
Alternatively you can write the word on a paper and let your child build and practice over it using play doh.

Activity 2 – Lego spellings
Using legos to build and spell is one of the most favorite way of learning to spell. All you need is some Lego blocks and a dry erase marker.
This is such a great way to practice because it focuses on sound mapping and building the word rather than just memorizing it.

Activity 4 – Clothespin spellings
Clothespin spellings activity is a great way to work on spelling while also working on building fine motor skills.
It’s super easy and quick to prepare with just some clothespins (letters written on it) and index cards.

Activity 5 – Spelling scavenger hunt
It always a fun idea to include movement in your learning time . Moving around helps kids focus much better and as a result they have a more fruitful learning time.
Hide the letters around the house and let your child find and bring them back to complete the spelling.

Activity 6 – Magnetic tiles spellings
This is perfect for days when you want something quick and easy with very little prep work needed.
Few magnetic tiles and a dry erase marker to start practice the spellings , you may use a cookie tray or refrigerator as your canvas to build the words.


Activity 7 – Word Laundry
Prepare the activity by placing a long piece of tape(painter’s tape) to the wall as the ‘washing line’ and writing letters on sticky notes as the ‘laundry’.
Say a word and have your child find all the letters in the word. Put the sticky notes in the correct order on the washing line to spell the word.

Activity 8 – Paper cup spellings
An easily available supply at home can be your next fun way to help your kids practice spellings. Grab a marker and write the letters on the bottom of the cup .
Say out a word and let your child use the letter cups to complete the spelling.




Activity 9 – Glitter it up
Art activity is a perfect a way to make learning fun and enjoyable and kids absolutely love it.
Write spellings with white glue and sprinkle some glitter , shake off the extra glitter and now your spelling is sparkly ready . You can later put it on the wall as art display and review the spelling whenever needed.

Activity 10 – Spelling stepping stones
Use construction or craft paper to cut out circles and write letters on them(one on each) , now stick them on the floor.
Say out loud a word and let your child say each letter sound , jump on it and spell the complete word.
